Orleans Co. Tree Service Wins Five-Year Contract for Hazardous Tree Removal from City of Richmond

Orleans Co. Tree Service, a Chesterfield-based company serving Central Virginia since 1998, announced it has been awarded a five-year contract for the planned removal of hazard trees throughout the City of Richmond. Orleans is uniquely positioned to take on this job as they have the equipment and the capabilities to perform very technical and large-scale removals.

This contract is now in the hands of a local team with a history of dedication to the community.

Orleans has previously completed contracts with the City of Colonial Heights, City of Petersburg and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

“We’re always looking for new opportunities that will get us out there serving the community. Especially with these hazardous tree removals we pride ourselves on being able to remove them efficiently without causing any concern to the community,” said Board Certified Master Arborist Jeff Hillman.

Under the terms of their contract with the City of Richmond, Orleans will be responsible for removing trees that have been identified as hazardous by the city’s arborists. These trees pose a risk to public safety and property. Most of them are dead, almost dead or no longer fitting in the confines of a sidewalk or median. Orleans will also respond to emergency tree removals as needed.

Richmond’s list of hazardous trees will grow and shift over time. As the risk threshold changes new trees will be put on the list for removal. Hillman explains, “The City of Richmond has a huge urban forest already and there’s a lot of old trees that are aging out and losing space.”

With the help of a 100-ton crane and other crucial tree removal equipment, Orleans will be able to safely remove trees in crowded city areas all while minimizing disruption to the community.

Orleans’ qualifications for the tree removal project include:

• Specialized equipment: Orleans utilizes state-of-the-art equipment, including a 100-ton crane and aerial lifts, to safely and efficiently remove large and hazardous trees.
• Commitment to safety: Orleans prioritizes safety in all its operations and adheres to strict safety protocols to protect its crews, the public and surrounding property.

The contract will cover the removal of city-owned street trees located in sidewalks, medians and other public spaces throughout Richmond, including downtown, Monument Avenue and various neighborhoods. Work is expected to begin in December and continue throughout the five-year contract period.
